Recently, we had the chance to catch up with Larry from HandballAcademy.org (although it’s not up and running quite yet) – at the dog park, no less. You gotta love that about San Francisco.
Larry has started the HellHoleSF.com parties and been involved with HandballHeaven.com since its kick-off back in 2008.

At night, a spacious heated tent, as well as indoor play areas, outfitted with enough slings and benches to enable you to fulfill your every fantasy, will be stocked with lube, gloves, condoms, pads and paper towels. This men-only weekend is designed to help you fulfill your every ffisting ffantasy.
How long ago did you launch Handball Heaven?
January 2008 and our first Spring FFling was in May 2008.
and you launched because there weren’t any ff venues?
It was more of a local response to Fist Fest which is in Palm Springs every year. .I wanted to do something that was safer-sex and drug-free in orientation.
So you are coming up on your 3 year, what can an attendee expect?
72 hours of non-stop play? lol We have a “public” play space where guys can congregate. Most set up equipment (slings) in their rooms. We start off the weekend with a barbeque and mixer for the guys. We wrangle door prizes which we give away. And we raffle off high end leather goods, toys and our grand prize is a brand new portable sling stand with a sling, chains, the whole deal. All the raffle proceeds go to a local (in Sonoma County) AIDS charity. Last year the charity was the Sonoma County AIDS Emergency Fund. We raised just over $700. Then we went back over Memorial Day weekend and had a swimsuit auction which raised another $700 for the AEF.
When is the event this year?
Tentatively April 30 – May 2. I’m still waiting to hear back from the resort.
Typical number of attendees?
The first year we had about 80. Last year we had about 50, but it rained all weekend which cut down on our day pass people.
There is belief that ff and drugs go hand in hand – can you speak to that?
Yes, I think that has been the common wisdom for a long time. But I think that is diminishing now. There were lots of guys who just couldn’t get fisted without being high. The rationale was that the drugs deadened the pain receptors, so they could do it and it didn’t hurt. The reality was / is that if you’re deadening the pain receptors, you’re also deadening the pleasure receptors, so you’re not experiencing the pleasure.
There is also a concern about returning to “normal.”
LOL. Well, it’s all about muscle control. The sphincter is a muscle. It has a memory, so that when it stretches, it remembers the size it used to be and goes back to that. I’ve been fisting for 15 years and I promise that when I go swimming, I don’t fill up with water.
Relaxation and trust are also a big part of being able to be fisted. As you learn to relax, it gets easier over time to take a hand and you will start to open up more quickly as you practice.
What health concerns are there and what do you promote around safer sex and FF?
All the usual warnings about STD’s apply. HIV and Hepatitis are especially of concern.
HCV is the main issue now. HCV is off most people’s radar because doctors don’t routinely screen for it unless you’re HIV+ or an IV drug user.
HCV can live and be infectious for over 4 days in dried blood. MRSA and Syphilis are also concerns. Syphilis has been on the rampage in SF for the last couple of years and it can be spread through fisting. HCV=Hep C.
We really promote wearing gloves, washing hands and arms, using the right disinfectant and cleaning supplies. Don’t clear the trash without wearing gloves, common sense things like that. We also provide a 4 way quaternary ammonium solution to kill all the viruses on the slings in between play sessions.
As you mentioned trust is a big factor, how does a newbie find a reliable fister?
If someone wants to find a reliable partner, they should come to one of our parties.
Seriously. We’ve got guys with decades of experience–tops and bottoms–most of whom are more than willing to work with a “newbie.’
Another alternative is to come to one of our novice workshops, which will be held quarterly next year. Still another would be to come to one of our Red Hanky Nites at Chaps which will be on the first Thursday of every month starting in January. We’ll also have 4 panel discussions next year as well.
Hooking up online can work, but that’s really hard. Most people don’t want to be all that honest about experience levels. The pressure is really high and it’s hard to fake it.
